Memory clinic

How is Dementia diagnosed?

Concerns about memory problems can be quite distressing as patients and families sometimes think that it could be Alzheimer's disease. Memory loss alone does not always indicate dementia or other serious problems.

São José Hospital Memory Clinic offers a comprehensive assessment to enable the early detection of dementia. We can assess whether any impairment is likely to be caused by Alzheimer's disease or one of the other common forms of dementia.

On the other hand poor memory may be a symptom of depression or anxiety or just the result of natural processes of ageing.

The Clinic is held on Saturday mornings by appointment.

  • To give an in-depth assessment of a person's memory function.
  • To make a diagnosis and exclude and treat any reversible causes.
  • To provide support and counselling to sufferers and carers and where necessary to put them in touch with the appropriate services within the community.
  • To offer treatment with medications to suitable patients.

Patients are assessed by Dr V Sivakumar, Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist.

The assessments include

  • Full medical history
  • Neuropsychological assessment
  • Physical examination
  • Screening blood tests, MRI brain scan, ECG
  • Recommendation to start treatment with one of the Alzheimer’s medications if appropriate

Following each visit a report is sent to the GPs so they are kept fully informed.

Follow Up

After the confirmation of diagnosis and stabilisation on medication for dementia, patients will be offered follow up at São José Hospital or referred to the NHS services if requested.
